It was a busy birthday weekend. My mother and brother came to visit and so we had a chance to explore town and do fun activities as tourists. We went to the beach and visited temples during the day, and when the night came, we rented a small wooden boat to ride along a river sparkling of lantern lights. We ate our way through the town, from a fancy restaurant where Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones dined to 10-cent street food. It was just fabulous!

This birthday was a special one to me, although I had almost forgotten about it until my husband reminded me of it two weeks before. Every day of the past year was so full of joy and happiness I thought my birthday would be just another happy day and there’s no need to make a fuss about it. But then my mother and brother came and I realized that it was the first time in 14 years I got to spend my birthday with them. My mother could only spend one full day with us, but she made us feel like children on Christmas Eve. She brought us nice gifts and even carried several gigantic pears all the way from Korea just because she knew how much my husband and I love Asian pears.

Before my family came, I stuffed my fridge with so much food hoping I’d have the chance to show off my cooking skill, but most of the time my mom treated us to nice meals out so this “shaken” beef or Bò Lúc Lắc was the only dish I was able to make while she was here.

Bò Lúc Lắc is one of those Vietnamese dishes that looks too simple to be something special, just some beef cubes with a bit of sauce and perhaps served over leafy vegetables. But once you pop the first piece into your mouth you realize why this Vietnamese dish inspires Vietnamese people and Vietnamese food lovers around the world to seek out restaurants and friends who can do it justice.

Shaken beef is an incredibly simple dish to make and it showcases the savoriness and texture of the beef you choose to make it with. This dish can be whipped up in just a few minutes, and it gives you a fresh and delicious dinner that you’ll keep coming back to.

A comfort food, a memory of home cooking, or something new, this dish is universally enjoyed and lauded by those who’ve tried it. Don’t let the simplicity of the dish fool you into thinking this couldn’t possibly be something special. Spend a few minutes making it and tell us if this didn’t instantly become one of your “go-to” dinners!

Check out the video below to see how to make it for yourself! Chúc ngon miệng!
